Software development is more than producing code that runs once. To investigate the work, consider how you would understand a user’s need, make a design decision, test behavior and improve a system over time. A graduate degree is useful only if you can explain which capabilities it would add to your current preparation. Start there before choosing a specialization or assuming the most advanced credential is the necessary next step.
What developers work on
BLS describes developers as designing applications or underlying systems, analyzing users’ needs and contributing to the development process. It distinguishes software developers from quality assurance analysts and testers, while noting that the work is collaborative. Read the BLS profile with attention to the specific occupation rather than treating its combined headline as one job.
Is graduate study necessary?
BLS identifies a relevant bachelor’s degree as typical entry education and says some employers prefer developers with a master’s. That does not make a master’s a universal entry condition. Research the responsibilities and requirements of specific work you hope to pursue. An advanced research-oriented role and an application-development role may involve different expectations.
A master’s may deserve investigation when you need stronger foundations in algorithms, systems, computing theory or a specialized technical field. If your immediate gap is basic programming, a program that assumes substantial prior knowledge may be a difficult first step. Build a preparation map and ask the department how it evaluates equivalent coursework or experience. Keep any required foundations in the time and cost scenario.
Choose the capability you want to develop
| Development question | Evidence to seek in a curriculum |
|---|---|
| Can I reason about a design? | Assignments requiring explicit assumptions, alternatives and tradeoffs. |
| Can I understand system behavior? | Substantive systems work, measurement and analysis rather than tool familiarity alone. |
| Can I validate an implementation? | Testing, review, reproducibility and clear explanations of limitations. |
| Can I collaborate? | Team work with meaningful feedback and responsibility for shared outcomes. |
Look at required courses, not only attractive electives. Ask which subjects are offered often enough to fit your sequence and how much specialist depth remains after the core. Investigate whether projects are individual, collaborative, applied or research-oriented. A course with an advanced title may still be a poor fit if it repeats your background or does not teach the methods your goal requires.
A practical exploration project
Choose a small, low-stakes application for a fictional organization. Define a user need, a limited set of requirements and an explicit boundary on scope. Build a simple version, write tests and document what remains unresolved. Then change one requirement and explain the consequences for the design. This is a learning exercise, not a claim that a personal project substitutes for a professional review.
Ask someone knowledgeable to review both the implementation and the explanation. Which decisions were easy? Where did you rely on trial and error without understanding the result? Those observations can reveal whether you need foundations, a particular technical subject, a more disciplined development process or experience working with others. Use the result to compare educational routes.
U.S. wage and employment context
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook reports a May 2025 national median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers, with employment projected to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035. The wage and projection here use the developer subgroup; the page also covers quality assurance analysts and testers, whose figures differ.
These are U.S. occupational estimates, not starting salaries, a survey of graduates from a particular program, or an estimate of the extra income caused by a master’s. A median describes the middle of a wage distribution. Location, employer, experience and responsibilities matter. Use local evidence for your own planning, and do not treat projected employment growth as a personal probability of getting a job.
Check the actual online experience
Ask what software, hardware and computing resources are required. Find out how code review, project feedback and teaching assistance work for remote students. Check live meetings, exam windows and team obligations in your time zone. Recorded lectures do not establish that every part of the degree is self-paced.
If you want to use work-related material in a project, confirm permissions before sharing code, data or architecture. A program should offer a workable academic project without assuming access to an employer’s confidential systems. Find out whether required tools run on your equipment and whether accessibility support covers the environments used for assessment.
Compare a degree with narrower alternatives
If the gap is a new language, a framework or a defined engineering practice, focused study and supervised experience may be worth comparing with a full degree. If you need broad computing foundations, investigate computer science. If the goal is secure systems, compare technical cybersecurity curricula while checking the depth they assume and provide. A program’s label cannot settle that comparison.
Build a feasible course sequence and a complete financial scenario. Include any bridge work, mandatory fees, resources and the implications of a slower pace. Then explain what you expect to learn that you could not reasonably obtain through the alternatives. Keep that learning case separate from an occupational wage figure or an assumption that graduation will produce a particular promotion.
Computer Science
Choose an online computer science master’s by matching its technical depth and prerequisites to the computing problems you want to solve. A program designed for experienced programmers is a different route from one with an explicit bridge for applicants from other fields.
ExploreCybersecurity
An online cybersecurity master’s can emphasize hands-on technical defense, governance and risk, or a blend. Choose by the security work you want to do and the background the curriculum assumes, then verify labs and attendance requirements.
ExploreInformation Technology
Choose an online IT master’s by the systems and organizational responsibilities you want to handle. Compare the technical depth, management content and entry requirements with computer science, cybersecurity and a broader business route.
ExploreCompare Programs
Compare the same practical facts across up to four programs.
