Admissions and preparation
A qualifying bachelor’s degree or accepted equivalent is required; international credentials require evaluation. GRE and GMAT are not required. Confirm individual transcript requirements and any program-specific preparation directly with admissions.
UMGC’s online MBA lists a 30-credit curriculum with a broad business core, specialization work and a capstone. Compare it by the management decisions you want to make and the participation and complete price of the exact route you would take.
What does the required business study cover?
The official plan describes core study across organizational change, marketing, accounting, innovation, finance and business analytics, plus specialization and capstone work. Use that breadth to ask how the degree connects business functions. A strong personal reason to consider an MBA should be more specific than adding a general credential: identify decisions or responsibilities you want to handle better.
Read the specialization requirements after the core. A specialization complements the MBA core; check how its courses fit the full degree plan. Ask which electives are regularly offered in the terms you plan to study. If your main goal is depth in a single technical or business field, compare a specialized master’s and explain what the MBA’s breadth would add.
Which entry route would you use?
UMGC’s general graduate policy requires a qualifying bachelor’s degree or accepted equivalent and says GRE and GMAT are not required. International credentials have evaluation requirements. Confirm all individual entry, transcript and course conditions with admissions. A test-free policy does not promise admission or mean the academic work will be light.
If you already have graduate credit or qualify for a published accelerated or dual-degree pathway, request approval before assuming a shorter route. Keep the ordinary 30-credit plan separate from an individually assessed reduction. A maximum number of possible transfer credits should not be treated as a personal award, and a convenient application process should not replace a preparation and workload assessment.
How should a working student assess the format?
The degree advertises online coursework and selected hybrid availability. Confirm the required live sessions, examinations, team meetings and capstone arrangements for the online version. Ask for a sample weekly calendar and find out which activities are flexible. A program can offer recorded material while still requiring coordinated group work.
Compare a realistic pace with the advertised shortest route. The university describes completion in as little as 16 months, which should not be treated as a typical duration or a personal guarantee. Account for work travel, busy seasons and family commitments. A slower sustainable plan may be more useful than a nominally fast route that depends on participation you cannot reliably provide.
What does the current price basis mean?
The current stateside specialty rate is $694 per credit for in-state or out-of-state students before any eligibility-based reduction. Thirty credits at that rate give $20,820 in tuition only. Fees and other confirmed expenses must be assessed separately. The rounded marketing description of about $21,000 is not used here as a verified complete cost.
UMGC identifies specialized business accreditation through IACBE for its School of Business programs, including the MBA, in addition to institutional MSCHE accreditation. Those are accreditation statements, not promises of a promotion or earnings increase. Compare the complete price, curriculum and opportunity cost with a specialized degree or focused learning route, and keep possible employer reimbursement separate until its conditions and timing are known.
Questions that make the comparison concrete
- Which required assignments address the management decisions I want to learn?
- What specialization sequence is actually available at my intended pace?
- Which live meetings and team obligations apply to online students?
- What prior credit or accelerated route has the university actually approved for me?
- What fees, tuition category and total schedule should my financial plan include?
