Admissions and preparation
A qualifying bachelor’s degree or accepted equivalent and the required official records are necessary. International credentials require evaluation. GRE and GMAT are not required. Confirm preparation for the IT core and whether an orientation course applies.
UMGC’s 30-credit MS in Information Technology with a Project Management concentration combines an IT core with project study. Compare it if your goal involves directing technology work, while distinguishing it from the university’s separate management degree route.
What is the actual credential and focus?
This record describes the MS in IT concentration, not UMGC’s separate MS in Management project-management route. The official plan lists an IT core and concentration courses addressing project planning, resources, uncertainty and related delivery questions. Keep the exact credential with your notes so that credits, prerequisites and costs from another program are not accidentally combined.
The technical context is a useful comparison point. If you want to manage technology implementations, ask how the program connects systems knowledge with project decisions. If you want project preparation across a different industry, inspect whether a broader project or management degree would serve your needs more directly. A shared project-management label does not make the underlying core interchangeable.
What preparation should you establish?
UMGC’s general graduate policy requires a qualifying bachelor’s degree or accepted equivalent, with additional official-record conditions for education outside the United States. GRE and GMAT are not required. Ask the program what technical knowledge it expects for the IT core and how your actual coursework or experience demonstrates that preparation.
If a prerequisite, orientation course or approved prior-credit route applies, include it in the academic plan. Do not assume experience automatically waives a requirement or that a transfer maximum is an approved reduction. Identify which parts of project work you already understand and which you want to develop, such as procurement, risk analysis, resource decisions or communication across a technical team.
How can you test online participation?
The page lists all courses as available online, with selected hybrid options. Confirm the actual live sessions, presentations, group meetings and examination arrangements for your selected online sequence. Project study can involve substantial coordination, so ask how teams are assigned and how time-zone differences are handled.
If you hope to use a workplace project, clarify permission, confidentiality and scope before sharing documentation. Internal plans, vendor arrangements and technical records can be sensitive. A public, synthetic or university-provided case may be more feasible when permissions are uncertain. Ask how supervision and feedback work and how the project can continue if your job or access changes.
How should you compare cost and certification claims?
At the current standard in-state rate of $555 per credit, a 30-credit tuition-only calculation is $16,650. Fees and any additional individual requirements remain unresolved, so this is not represented as a complete price. Other tuition categories differ. Use the current fee schedule and a term plan to establish the amount you would actually need to pay.
UMGC’s accreditation disclosure explicitly lists the MS in IT Project Management among programs covered by PMI’s Global Accreditation Center. Accreditation and certification are different matters. The degree does not automatically award PMP, CAPM or another professional credential. Verify the issuer’s current education, experience and examination rules separately, and compare a focused preparation course if your immediate goal is a narrow certification requirement.
Questions for a decision-focused shortlist

- Which assignments connect project methods with technology decisions?
- What live meetings, team work and capstone conditions apply?
- How does this route differ from the separate management project concentration?
- Which complete fees and independent certification steps belong in my plan?
