A clearer path to your next degree.

Online Master’s Admission Requirements

Check the requirements of the exact online degree and entry term. A university-wide minimum is the starting point; program prerequisites, documents, tests and attendance conditions can add separate requirements.

Build one requirement map for each program

Before paying an application fee, open the graduate school instructions and the specific degree’s admissions page. Keep both links and the date you checked them. Record what the university asks applicants to demonstrate, what evidence it accepts, when that evidence is due, and whether there is a separate decision about prerequisites. A directory description cannot settle these questions for your circumstances.

Use three categories: a condition you already meet, a condition you can realistically satisfy before entry, and a condition that needs a written answer. Do not interpret a blank field as a waiver. If two official pages disagree, identify the conflict in your question to the program rather than choosing whichever requirement is more convenient.

Separate eligibility from preparation

An accepted prior degree does not necessarily demonstrate readiness for advanced coursework. Review required subjects and the depth of preparation expected. For a quantitative program, gather course descriptions and examples of the mathematics, statistics or programming you have studied. For an experience-based professional program, explain the work you actually performed and the responsibility you held.

UT Austin’s Computer & Data Science Online FAQ illustrates this distinction: it describes degree requirements and different academic preparation for its computing and data programs. Meeting a broad qualification does not automatically secure admission. Read the university’s exact explanation.

Read the test policy as a separate requirement

Find out which test is meant. A program may have one rule for the GRE or GMAT and another for English proficiency. Check whether a score is required, optional, not considered, or waived only when stated conditions apply. If seeking a waiver, record who decides it, the evidence required and when approval must be received. Do not remove the task from your plan until the university confirms it.

Choose evidence that the program can use

For every document, identify its purpose. A transcript establishes an academic record; a résumé explains experience; a statement connects your preparation with your goals; a recommendation offers another person’s assessment. Each should contribute evidence instead of repeating the same unsupported claim. Submit the requested materials through the correct portal, with the requested filenames and file limits.

For example, Berkeley’s Graduate Division lists recommendations and statements within its application requirements and directs applicants to program-specific instructions. That is an example of one institution’s process, not a promise that every online master’s asks for the same items. Check Berkeley’s published instructions.

A practical requirements worksheet

RequirementEvidence to collectQuestion if unclear
Prior degreeInstitution, credential and completion dateIs this credential accepted for this exact program?
PrerequisiteCourse title, syllabus, grade and dateDoes this course satisfy the stated preparation?
Test rulePolicy text for the correct cycleIs a waiver needed and when is it decided?
RecommendationEligible recommender and submission methodAre professional references acceptable?
DeadlineDate, time zone and materials coveredMust supporting documents also arrive by this time?

Plan around dependencies

Order tasks by what can delay something else. A prerequisite course, transcript request, credential evaluation, test appointment or recommender’s schedule may determine the earliest realistic application. Your own essay draft may be more flexible. Work backward from the actual deadline with a buffer for problems, but do not invent an early deadline to create pressure.

Hypothetical example: an applicant can prepare a statement in two weeks, but a prerequisite will not be completed until after the proposed start date. The important question is whether the program accepts the prerequisite in progress and when final evidence must arrive. Finishing the essay faster will not resolve that dependency.

Ask a narrow question that can receive a useful answer

Include the degree name, intended start term, the published condition and the relevant fact about your background. Ask whether that evidence satisfies the condition or what additional step is required. Avoid sending your entire life history when one course equivalency is the question. Use the university’s secure submission route if it asks for records; do not put transcripts or identity documents into a public comment.

Keep the response with your requirement map. A general encouragement to apply is different from a formal waiver or an admission decision. If a material condition is unresolved, mark it as unresolved in the comparison rather than assuming that admission or later enrollment will solve it.

Make the next step concrete

GRE, GMAT and Waiver Policies

A “no GRE” headline can mean a required test has been removed, a test is optional, or a waiver is available only for some applicants. Check the exact policy before using it to shortlist a program.

Writing a Statement of Purpose

A useful statement of purpose explains what you want to study, what prepares you for it, why the specific program fits, and what you hope to do next. Build it from evidence and answer the university’s actual prompt.
