A clearer path to your next degree.

What an Online Master’s Really Costs

Start with the applicable billing rule

Find out whether tuition is charged per credit, by term or as a program price. Check the exact degree, location, entry term and enrollment category. For a per-credit degree, confirm both the applicable rate and the credits you must complete. A term-based or subscription price needs the number of terms in your own scenario; a short completion time cannot be assumed for every student.

Identify mandatory fees

Ask for required fees that apply to your planned enrollment. They may be billed once, each term, by course or by another rule. Keep the fee’s unit and timing with the amount. An empty fee field means the complete price is unresolved. It does not mean that the university charges no fees.

Add the expenses you will actually incur

  • Books, software, equipment or other required supplies.
  • Travel, accommodation or transport for required visits and placements.
  • Costs linked to proctoring, examinations or a required practical experience where they apply.
  • The consequences of a changed course load, repeated course or extra term.

Avoid combining the same expense twice. If a university’s tuition package includes a resource, note that inclusion before adding a separate estimate. Keep living expenses or reduced earnings in a separate broader planning scenario if they would differ from what you would otherwise spend or earn.

A worked example using hypothetical inputs

Suppose you enter 36 credits at $600 each, $900 in mandatory fees, and $600 in selected additional expenses. Tuition is $21,600. The complete stated scenario is $23,100. If you have $2,000 in confirmed nonrepayable support, the estimated net cost is $21,100. These are illustrative inputs, not a university’s price quote.

Part of the exampleAmount
36 × $600 tuition$21,600
Mandatory fees$900
Selected additional expenses$600
Complete stated scenario$23,100
Confirmed nonrepayable support−$2,000
Estimated net cost$21,100

What changes when fees are unknown

Leave mandatory fees blank in the calculator if you have not confirmed them. The tool can still show a known subtotal, but it will keep the complete total and net cost unresolved. That distinction matters when a program needs to fit a strict budget. Use the missing amount as a specific question for the university.

Keep support and financing separate

Record grants, scholarships or employer contributions with their conditions and confirmation status. Do not subtract a loan as though it were a discount. If support requires you to remain employed, maintain a grade or repay an award under certain conditions, include that uncertainty in your decision rather than treating the amount as unconditional.

Compare equivalent scenarios

Use the same intended pace and included expense categories for every program. Retain the academic year, credit system and residency basis. For example, UT Austin’s Computer and Data Science Online pages advertise a tuition price plus fees; the tuition headline alone should not be described as the complete price. Ask each university what will apply to your actual start and enrollment pattern.

Save the assumptions with the result

Keep a copy of the official schedule and the date you checked it. Write down which amounts are confirmed, estimated or unknown. Revisit the scenario when the university issues an offer, a new fee schedule or a revised study plan.
