Admissions and preparation
A recognized bachelor’s degree or comparable qualification is required. Quantitative undergraduate backgrounds receive preference; other backgrounds are considered using coursework and experience. A 3.0 junior/senior GPA on a 4.0 scale is required. GRE and GMAT are not required and are not reviewed. Some applicants may need bridge coursework with assessment scores of at least 80%.
The current Penn State bulletin identifies this online credential as the 30-credit Master of Data Analytics. It is an applied route delivered through World Campus, distinct from Great Valley’s research-oriented MS and from an older MPS label in legacy material.
Why does the credential distinction matter?
The 2026–2027 bulletin identifies Great Valley as the academic setting for the program and distinguishes the MDA delivered online through World Campus from the MS delivered in residence. Keep the exact credential and mode together. A similar subject title is not enough to establish that admission, curriculum and research conditions from another route apply here.
The online program combines analytical study with a culminating applied experience. Inspect how required work connects data collection and management with analysis and communication. If you want to develop a practical analytical system, ask how students define the problem, evaluate their method and explain the result. If your main goal is research training, compare supervision and research depth with an appropriate research degree rather than assuming the MDA and MS are interchangeable.
What preparation and bridge conditions apply?
The World Campus admission description prefers quantitative undergraduate backgrounds and considers other backgrounds using preparation and experience. It specifies a 3.0 junior/senior GPA on a 4.0 scale and says GRE and GMAT are not required or reviewed. Some applicants may need preparatory bridge coursework with assessment scores of at least 80%.
A bridge can make a route worth investigating for a career changer, but it is not an automatic admission promise. Ask which preparation your record would require, when it must be completed and what it costs. Compare the starting course expectations with your mathematics, statistics and programming experience. Keep a required bridge outside the graduate credit total unless the university explicitly confirms otherwise.
How should you assess the online work?
The program advertises online coursework. Confirm required live meetings, examinations, collaborative projects and capstone participation for your sequence. Ask which computing resources are provided and how online students obtain help. The ability to access material remotely does not answer every scheduling or project question.
A useful capstone question should be feasible with data you are permitted to use. If you hope to connect it with your employment, clarify authorization and confidentiality first. A public or synthetic dataset may be a better starting point than an internal export. Ask how feedback is provided on problem framing, analytical validity and communication, and whether the project remains workable if your job changes.
What is the current financial basis?
For 2026–2027, the program lists $1,089 per credit for a semester load of 11 or fewer credits. Thirty credits at that rate give a tuition-only scenario of $32,670. The page separately describes full-time semester billing and already publishes a higher subsequent-year rate. The single-year multiplication is therefore an assumption, not a guarantee that later courses will cost the same.
Mandatory fees, any required preparation and confirmed computing or travel expenses need separate assessment. Keep approved prior credit and employer support separate from unconfirmed possibilities. Compare the whole route with a data science or business analytics alternative according to the actual learning you need, and do not use an occupation-wide salary as a forecast of the return from this degree.
