A clearer path to your next degree.

Explore online master’s degrees in law & legal studies

Separate learning about legal issues from pursuing a professional law degree. MLS and MJ programs can serve nonlawyers, while an LLM commonly builds on prior legal education. A JD is a different degree route. Begin with your existing qualification and intended work before comparing formats.

The ABA Council’s degree overview distinguishes academic master’s degrees for nonlawyers from post-JD law degrees such as the LLM. Universities set their own exact entry requirements. If your goal involves qualification for legal practice, obtain the intended jurisdiction’s admission authority requirements before choosing a program. This page compares education routes and does not determine individual bar, attorney-license or limited-license eligibility.

Explore the routes by preparation and purpose

Investigate general legal studies when the learning need is understanding legal concepts, reading legal material and communicating more effectively about regulated work. Ask whether you need broad foundations or a particular emphasis. An elective list containing employment, environmental and intellectual-property topics does not mean every student studies all of them in depth.

The University of Arizona’s online Master of Legal Studies is a 30-unit example. Its general degree path combines foundations such as contracts, torts, property, constitutional law, procedure and legal research and writing, followed by electives. Review the actual sequence and online availability of your intended emphasis. Sharing subject names with JD courses does not make the two degrees interchangeable.

Ask how assignments teach you to identify an issue, locate appropriate authority and explain uncertainty. Keep the limits of your role clear: studying a legal subject does not itself establish permission to provide a regulated service. Any separately regulated pathway needs its own authority-specific evaluation, rather than an inference from the degree’s name.

MJ: a focused compliance and risk curriculum

A focused nonlawyer master’s can address a narrower organizational problem than a general legal-studies plan. Compare required courses with the responsibilities you want to understand: designing a compliance process, investigating how a rule affects operations, or communicating risks to decision-makers. Ask how the final work demonstrates those skills rather than relying on a concentration title.

Loyola Chicago’s online MJ in Compliance and Enterprise Risk Management is a 30-credit example covering legal study and research, business organizations, compliance, enterprise risk and a final project. It requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and does not require prior legal education or attorney status. The page describes primarily asynchronous courses while also noting live virtual sessions. Confirm participation expectations; optional immersion events and required attendance are different matters.

Compare that learning goal with a human-resources or public-administration degree if your central responsibility is workforce management or public operations. Legal study may supply one kind of analysis, while another degree supplies different methods and organizational depth. A certificate or a smaller set of courses can also be worth investigating for a bounded gap.

LLM: advanced study after a first law degree

An LLM is a different starting point from a nonlawyer master’s. Read the exact prior-degree rule rather than assuming that any bachelor’s degree qualifies. International and domestic legal qualifications may follow different application instructions, and a subject-specific LLM can presuppose substantial legal foundations.

Boston University’s LLM in Taxation requires a first law degree such as a JD, LLB or international equivalent and at least 24 credits. Its online route permits full-time or part-time study using recorded lectures and materials. The curriculum includes business and international taxation and estate-planning subjects. Use the ordinary online route’s own instructions; do not transfer requirements or eligibility statements from a separately described residential or bar-qualification option.

For a law graduate, the useful comparison is what new legal depth the LLM would add, how assessments develop it, and whether the chosen schedule is feasible. For someone without the required prior law qualification, investigate the appropriate nonlawyer route or a different professional education plan instead of treating the LLM as a shorter substitute.

JD: compare the professional route separately

A JD is not a master’s degree. If it is the route you are investigating, use JD-specific admission instructions and disclosures rather than the MLS or LLM application rules. Confirm the exact program’s format, curriculum, practical work and jurisdiction-specific implications with the responsible institutions and admission authority.

As a format example, Syracuse’s JDinteractive FAQ describes live and self-paced online coursework together with required in-person residencies and an externship. This illustrates why an online law-program label is insufficient for planning travel or time away from work. It is not a conclusion about any reader’s eligibility to enroll, sit an examination or enter practice.

Read accreditation claims at the right scope

The ABA Council’s accreditation FAQ explains that its accreditation does not extend to non-JD degrees and that acquiescence in a non-JD program is not approval of that degree. Do not describe an MLS, MJ or LLM as ABA-accredited because the law school offers an approved JD. Ask about the university’s institutional accreditation and any separately relevant specialized credential without treating one as proof of another.

A worked hypothetical choice

Suppose an operations manager wants to understand a new compliance responsibility and has no prior law degree. They could compare the required legal foundation in an MLS with the focused compliance and risk work in an MJ, then ask whether a smaller course sequence meets the learning need. The BU LLM example has a different prior-degree condition. None of these comparisons establishes what services the manager may legally provide or guarantees a change in job title.

Check the complete practical plan

  • Confirm the exact prior-degree and application requirements for the route you intend to enter.
  • Ask about live classes, assessment windows, residencies, projects, placements and location restrictions.
  • Obtain a complete tuition-and-mandatory-fee scenario, including any extra terms or required travel; a per-credit headline is incomplete.
  • Keep admission, academic credit, employment, certification and legal-practice eligibility as separate decisions.
